Friuli Venezia Giulia: a land of passion, tradition and culture.


Friuli Venezia Giulia is a land of ancient wine-making traditions, the area is rich in its variety of vines which make some of the best wines in Italy. The best known of which are certainly the whites, but production is about 50% with the reds. Next to international vines, which are the most used, there are still autoctonous vines like Pignolo, Tazzelenghe, Terrano, red Refosco dal Peduncle with a black grape, Ribolla Gialla, Picolit, Verduzzo Friulano, Tocai Friulano with white grapes. The region, high on the list for national production, is represented by 2 DOCG, 9 DOC and 3 IGTs, which mean that nearly all of the products come from protected varieties. The geographical placement and climactic conditions make the soil in this region perfect for the cultivation of vines. On the Friulian plains, the climate is of a sub-Mediterranean humid type, in the hillside zones it becomes continental. Precipitations over the whole of Friuli are abundant and well distributed over the year, rain is fundamental for the water supply of the vines and for increasing the level of sugars in the grapes. The northern zone is mountainous and vines are not cultivated, the most important zone is that of the hills and near to the sea. The region is criss-crossed by several rivers, the most important of which are the Tagliamento and the Isonzo and near to these, the vines find an ideal climate for cultivation.

In the small town of Rauscedo, located in the Grave near to the Meduna river, there is the largest centre in the world for the production of vine cuttings, i.e. small vine cuttings grafted on rootstocks which will then be planted, cultivated to go on to become proper vines.

 

The DOC Zones :

 

Friuli Grave

The Grave zone extends over a surface of about 7 500 hectares straddling the Tagliamento river, in the provinces of Udine and Pordenone. This area, going up to the alpine arch, has been formed over thousands of years with deposits of dolomitic limestone material coming down the valleys with flooding. The land is characterized by an ample stony surface which increases the temperature range between day and night, this aspect promotes the cultivation of particularly aromatic grapes and perfumed and elegant wines. The white grape wines are fresh, fruity and elegant; the reds are balanced and perfumed when young, full and structured when aged.

Red wines: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Nero, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso

White wines: Chardonnay, Friulano, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Sauvignon, Traminer Aromatico, Verduzzo Friulano.

 

Friuli Annia

The Doc Friuli Annia zone has recently been established, but the wine tradition of this area has very antique origins. The area crosses the ancient “Annia way” and is characterized in the most southern part by the Marano Lagoon from which it receives the benefits of the ventilated lagoon climate and it produces lively and flavoursome white wines.

White wines: Chardonnay, Malvasia, Pinot bianco, Pinot grigio, Tocai Friulano, Verduzzo Friulano, Traminer aromatico, Sauvignon

 

Friuli Aquileia

The Doc Friuli Aquileia wine making area covers over 900 hectares of vines and is made up of a ribbon of land which faces the Grado Lagoon and moves north, towards Aquileia and Cervignano del Friuli, until reaching the historical fort town of Palmanova. The climate benefits from its proximity to the sea: in the summer there is always a breeze and so it is less humid and in the winter it is milder with temperatures that very rarely go below zero. The soils are mainly clayey, originating from floods and rich in minerals. The wines are excellent and particularly fragrant.

Friuli Latisana

The DOC area "Friuli Latisana" extends across the southern part of the province of Udine and is mainly made up of clayey soils, difficult to work, but rich in mineral salts which give a particular aroma to these wines and makes them unmistakable: 400 hectares of specialized vines, which are mainly red wines. The proximity to the sea means beneficial currents of warm, brackish air, making the production of an excellent and particularly fragrant wine possible.

The white wines are a subtle straw colour, pleasantly soft, with a characteristic and delicate nose. They should be drunk as a young wine, to fully appreciate the fragrance and bouquet which sets them apart.

The red wines are a great bright red colour, round-bodied, with taste and bouquet characteristics which also allow for ageing.

Red wines: Cabernet, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Franconia, Merlot, Pinot Nero, Refosco dal peduncolo rosso.

White wines: Chardonnay, Malvasia Istriana, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Riesling Renano, Sauvignon, Tocai Friulano, Traminer Aromatico, Verduzzo Friulano.

 

Colli Orientali del Friuli

This area covers the entire hill formation of the oriental portion of the province of Udine and has Cividale as its enological capital. In total, there are 2000 hectares of vineyards. The territory has been shaped over thousands of years from eocene deposits and the soils have alternating strata of marl (limestone clays) and sandstones (calcified sands) and have a very typical appearance. They are extraordinarily suitable for viticulture thanks to their position and composition. The climate boasts shelter from the Alps behind and constant ventilation from the Adriatic sea. The zone enjoys infinite micro-climates, more humid and fresh to the north near to the mountains and milder and drier towards the south.

Production is strictly contained in quantitative terms and is characterized by manual harvesting. The autoctonous vines boast thousands of years of tradition and the discipline of production of the Colli Orientali del Friuli counts the greatest number of autoctonous vines in Italy.

In this D.O.C. three “cru” (sub-zones) of particular merit have been identified: Ramandolo, Cialla and Rosazzo.

The first DOCG of the region derives from a Verduzzo friulano grape produced in a little area of the Colli Orientali del Friuli. An antique vine, Ramandolo is cultivated in the zone between Nimis and Tarcento. Production is limited to 280.000 bottles a year, it has a strong character and a pleasantly sweet taste, it is an ideal wine for meditation.

The second D.O.C.G. recognition arrived in 2006. Picolit is an antique autoctonous Friulian vine, characterized by its limited production due to a peculiarity in the development of the grapes which have a partial floral abortion, leaving the bunch sparse and with smaller, sweeter grapes. The colour is an intense copper yellow, tending towards amber and characterized by its great complexity and a variety of bouquets.

White wines: Bianco, Chardonnay, Dolce, Friulano, Malvasia Istriana, Picolit Docg, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Ramandolo Docg, Ribolla Gialla, Riesling, Sauvignon, Traminer Aromatico, Verduzzo Friulano.

 

Collio

The D.O.C. Collio area, known for its excellent production of D.O.C. wines, covers about 1600 hectares of specialized hill vines which extend along the northern hill area of the province of Gorizia next to the border with Slovenia. The vines which are cultivated today on the Collio are mostly of French origin, imported from 1850 onwards.

The proximity to the Giulie PreAlps leads to shelter from the northern winds and the propinquity to the Adriatic coast promotes the persistence of a moderate and mild micro climate. The Collio soils are made up of marls and sandstones from a eocene origin, brought to the surface in ancient times by the lifting of the Adriatic seabed. These rock formations easily break up under the action of atmospheric agents, creating a soil which, over the seasons, turns into an ideal substratum for viticulture. Alongside the soil, there is another excellent ally which is the climate. Ventilation is constant and abundant rain is well distributed over the year, creating a water supply in the superficial layers of the land which guarantees the ideal water supply even in the hottest periods. Moreover, the hill conformation of the area leads to discrete temperature changes between day and night.

These conditions promote the accumulation of sugars, pigments and aromatic substances in the grapes which characterize and make the Collio wines very typical. You can find soft and elegant notes in the reds, with warm, round sensations. In the whites, the freshness of the “in bianco” winemaking predominates, a method without contact with the skins, which characterizes their dry and harmonious flavour.

Carso

The Doc “Carso” area extends from the Karst plateau in the province of Trieste, to the sea, a small part in the province of Gorizia. The climate is characterized by mostly continental influences, mitigated by the Mediterranean influences which come from the coast. In summer, the marine breezes are constant and in the winter the plateau is hit with the cold Bora wind. The fine grapes make wines with a strong personality and slightly fruity, aromatic white wines.

Red wines: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Refosco dal Peduncolo rosso, Terrano.

White wines: Chardonnay, Malvasia, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon, Traminer Aromatico, Vitovska.

 

Friuli Isonzo

The area doc Isonzo includes a large part of the province of Gorizia and it is crossed by the Isonzo river. The territory is separated by the waters of the river, on the left is can be characterized by its slightly calcareous soils, rich in clays marbled with red gravel, while on the right it is more calcareous thanks to the presence of white gravel, The temperature is excellent thanks to the thermo-regulative action of the sea and the mountains which enclose the plain and hinder the penetration of wind from the north. The area is suited to the production of both red and white grapes, which give structure and colour to the red wines, intense and velvety, and an elegant and harmonious fragrance to the whites.

Lison Pramaggiore

This is an interregional DOC area between Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, with 6 municipalities in the province of Pordenone. The territory is prevalently flat, with glacial and flood soils, the Tagliamento river has had a decisive role in the conformation of the territory. The rich composition of the soil and the mild climate are at the root of the production of the fine wines of this zone. The soils are rich in calcium and produce fine wines, rich in aromatic substance. The DOC area Lison-Pramaggiore is blessed with a temperate climate, this characteristic is due to the latitude as well as the proximity to the sea, the flat plains and the consequent exposure to the winds.
